If you have downloaded a few things for Minecraft Bedrock Edition, you have probably seen the terms "behavior pack" and "resource pack" thrown around, sometimes both inside the same download. People often call the whole thing an "addon" and leave it at that, but the two pack types actually do very different jobs. Understanding the difference makes it much easier to install things correctly and to figure out why something isn't working the way you expected.
A behavior pack controls how the game works. It changes the rules, the logic, and the mechanics behind the scenes. When a behavior pack is active, it can:
None of this changes what anything looks like. A behavior pack could add a brand new mob with unique attacks, and by default it would still use a plain, unstyled model until a resource pack gives it an actual appearance.
A resource pack controls how the game looks and sounds. It never changes game logic on its own. A resource pack can:
A pure texture pack, the kind that just makes your world look more realistic or more cartoonish, is really just a resource pack with no behavior pack attached at all.
Most full addons, like a new mob, a furniture set, or a custom boss fight, ship as both a behavior pack and a resource pack bundled into one .mcaddon file. The behavior pack defines what the new content does, and the resource pack defines what it looks and sounds like. If you only import one half, you will usually get broken or invisible results: a mob that exists but has no model, or a texture pack with no new content behind it.
| Behavior Pack | Resource Pack |
|---|---|
| Game rules and mechanics | Textures, models, sounds |
| New mobs, items, scripts | How those mobs and items look |
| Loot tables, spawn rules | UI skins, particle effects |
| Invisible to the eye | Purely visual and audio |
File extensions are the easiest way to check:
On FleetMc Studio, the addon page tells you what type of content you are getting, and the download always includes everything needed for the addon to work correctly out of the box.
Knowing the difference helps you troubleshoot faster. If a new mob spawns but looks like a default, untextured shape, the resource pack side did not activate. If everything looks right but nothing new actually happens in your world, the behavior pack side probably was not activated, or a required experimental toggle is off. Both packs need to be turned on in your world settings separately, even when they were bundled in the same download.
Think of it like a video game character sheet and its 3D model. The behavior pack is the character sheet: stats, abilities, rules. The resource pack is the 3D model and animations: what you actually see and hear. Most good addons need both to feel complete, which is why they usually come bundled together.
